Anfar London Azule Elite Extrait de Parfum – 100 ml

Eau de Parfum vs. Extrait de Parfum: Which Concentration Should You Actually Buy?

Extrait de parfum holds roughly 20–40% fragrance oil to eau de parfum’s 15–20%, so it lasts longer and sits closer to the skin while an eau de parfum projects further and fades sooner. A side-by-side guide to longevity, projection, notes and which concentration to buy first.

Extrait de parfum holds roughly 20–40% fragrance oil, while eau de parfum holds about 15–20% — so the extrait lasts longer and stays closer to the skin, and the eau de parfum projects further and fades sooner. If you want a scent people notice when you walk in, buy the eau de parfum. If you want one still quietly there eight hours later that only reaches whoever is close to you, buy the extrait.

The one number behind the whole difference

A finished fragrance is aromatic materials dissolved in denatured alcohol and a little water. The percentage of those materials is the concentration, and it is the only thing the words on the box describe. The ladder runs eau fraîche, eau de cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and then parfum — also called extrait de parfum — at the top, at roughly 20–40% fragrance oil against eau de parfum’s 15–20%.

What matters is the flip side. If an extrait is 30% oil, it is correspondingly lower in alcohol — and alcohol is the part that evaporates fast and carries scent outward. Perfumers call it a solvent and diffusion accelerator. Without much of it, the composition warms up slowly on your skin instead of launching off it. That is why a more concentrated fragrance can smell quieter in the first minute than a weaker one.

Azule Elite shows what an extrait is for. No citrus opening at all — cardamom, oud and cinnamon arrive together at the top, the middle is woody, ambery and musky, and it closes on sandalwood and tonka bean. Warm from the first minute. Heavy, slow-evaporating materials have nothing to lose by being given less alcohol to travel on.

What the difference feels like to wear

The gap shows up in three places: how long it lasts, how far it carries, how much you apply. Longevity is the figure everybody quotes — extraits commonly running eight to twelve hours against an eau de parfum’s six to eight — but projection decides which bottle you reach for. An eau de parfum leaves a trail. An extrait leaves an impression on whoever hugs you.

Fragrantica’s column on extraits makes the point that the intimacy is a design decision, not a shortcoming. A scent that reveals itself to the person beside you is doing a different job from one that announces itself down a hallway. Neither is better.

Azha Ocean Breeze Eau de Parfum – 100 ml
Shop Azha Ocean Breeze Eau de Parfum – 100 ml →

Ocean Breeze is the other end of the same logic: a four-note citrus aromatic where the short list is the point. Lemon and mandarin open it, a single lavender note sits in the middle; musk and cedarwood close it. A composition this bright needs alcohol to throw it into the air. Rebuilding it as an extrait would be like putting a sprinter in a weighted vest.

Eau de parfum vs. extrait de parfum, side by side

That last row removes the usual complication. In most shops extraits come in small bottles and eaux de parfum in large ones, so you never compare like with like. Everything we stock arrives as a 100 ml bottle in the maker’s own box. The only variable left is what is inside it.

The same house, in both formats

The cleanest way to hear the difference is one house that makes both. Anfar London does. Almost everything we carry from them is an extrait, but Floral Bloom is their eau de parfum — florals the whole way down, a mixed-flower opening, alyssum and daisy keeping the middle light and green rather than heady, two kinds of jasmine at the base.

Anfar London Floral Bloom Eau de Parfum – 100 ml

Floral Bloom is all delicate top-and-heart material, the sort of thing that has to be lifted into the air to be perceived at all. An extrait version would smother it. Their heavier work goes the other way.

Anfar London Midnight Homme Intense Extrait de Parfum – 100 ml
Shop Anfar London Midnight Homme Intense Extrait de Parfum – 100 ml →

Midnight Homme Intense is a fougère built on spice rather than citrus alone: grapefruit with cardamom and nutmeg, lavender and bay leaf through the aromatic middle, sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver holding the base. Our product page says it plainly — being an extrait, it is denser than the usual eau de parfum. That density is why it reads as cold-weather even though nothing in the pyramid is wintry.

Where price fits in — and where it does not

The received wisdom is that extrait is the expensive tier. Across our range that is only half true. The least expensive bottles we stock are eaux de parfum, and Ocean Breeze sits right at the entry point — but the top of the range holds both formats side by side, with several Azha eaux de parfum priced identically to Anfar’s extraits. Concentration is not a straight price ladder here.

Anfar London The Masterpiece Extrait de Parfum – 100 ml
Shop Anfar London The Masterpiece Extrait de Parfum – 100 ml →

The Masterpiece makes that concrete. It is one of the least expensive extraits we carry and the most uncompromising thing on this page: leather from the first minute to the last, citrus cutting the opening, oud and amber in the middle, then back onto leather with patchouli underneath. Figures live on each product page; we do not print them here, because prices move and articles do not.

What concentration will not tell you

Here is the limit of the framework. Concentration describes intensity and duration, and says nothing about character. A 35% extrait of something you dislike is simply more of it, for longer. Choosing by percentage is like choosing a book by page count.

Azha Black Ruby Eau de Parfum – 100 ml
Shop Azha Black Ruby Eau de Parfum – 100 ml →

Black Ruby proves it. An eau de parfum that outlasts its format: a short list held a long time. Saffron opens it, incense sits in the middle, dry amber and musk carry the rest. No fruit, no flower, so what you smell an hour in is close to the start, only warmer and nearer the skin. Nothing on the label predicts that.

So read the notes first, the concentration second. If you still need a family before you pick a format, we walked the whole Azha line note by note in our guide to which fragrance to reach for tonight. Or browse the full fragrance collection by mood — the Warm & Woody and Fresh & Clean edits are where most people land.

A word about skin, before you buy either one

Fragrance is a common contact allergen, worth saying plainly. Patch-testing data reported by the American Academy of Family Physicians puts sensitisation to fragrance mix at roughly 1.7–4.1% of the general population, with about 10% of eczema patients reacting. The American Contact Dermatitis Society’s review of fragrance allergy names the usual culprits, among them linalool and limonene hydroperoxides, oakmoss absolute, isoeugenol and cinnamal.

That is not a reason to avoid perfume. It is a reason to apply it to intact rather than broken or freshly shaved skin, to try a new bottle on a small area first if your skin is reactive, and to stop using anything that makes you itch. If a rash does not settle, a dermatologist can patch-test you and name the material. A higher concentration means more of it per spray, so if you are sensitive, start with the eau de parfum.

Keeping either one alive

Storage does more for a bottle than concentration. Heat, light and humidity accelerate the chemistry that changes a scent’s colour, character and projection. A steady, cool, dark spot around 15–22°C is the target — which rules out a sunny windowsill and a steamy bathroom shelf. We covered application and storage in detail in our guide to making perfume last longer, including why moisturised skin holds a scent so much better than dry skin.

The nightstand test

A fragrance you wear out of the house is partly for other people. One you put on at nine in the evening, after the house has gone quiet and you are finally the only one awake, is entirely for you. Those are different bottles, and concentration decides which is which.

Shining Layla is the evening one here — coconut and almond opening creamy and nutty, chocolate and vanilla through the middle, praline and amber at the finish. The sweetest thing we stock by some distance. It is an eau de parfum, which is right for something you want to smell on your own wrist without it filling the bedroom.

One spray at the end of the day belongs to the same category as clean sheets and ten unclaimed minutes — less an indulgence than proof the day held something that was yours. If the pillowcase underneath is part of that, we covered washing every fabric in the pillowcase guide. Spray your skin, not the linen.

Buy the eau de parfum when you want to be noticed, the extrait when you want to be remembered by whoever gets close enough.

Concentration tells you how dense a fragrance is, but not whether you will want to wear it; for that you need the bottles themselves, so our pick of the best Calm Cloud fragrances for fall 2026 runs through seven of them by scent family, with the published note pyramid for each and the hour of the day it actually suits.

Questions, answered

Is extrait de parfum always better than eau de parfum?

No — it is stronger, which is not the same thing. An extrait carries roughly 20–40% fragrance oil to an eau de parfum’s 15–20%, so it lasts longer and sits closer to the skin. But a composition built to bloom off alcohol turns muted and heavy in extrait form. If you want people across a room to notice it, buy the eau de parfum. If you want it still there at bedtime and noticeable only to someone leaning in, buy the extrait.

How many sprays of extrait de parfum should I use?

Start with one and wait twenty minutes before adding a second. Extrait is denser and lower in alcohol, so it does not flash off and open up the way an eau de parfum does in the first few minutes — what you smell straight after spraying is a fraction of what will be there in an hour. One spray at the base of the throat or on an inner wrist is a complete application for most extraits.

Can I wear an extrait de parfum to the office or around a newborn?

An extrait is usually the safer choice in close quarters, because its lower alcohol content means it diffuses slowly and stays near the skin rather than filling the room. One spray on a wrist is far more containable than three sprays of a high-projection eau de parfum. Still, apply it to skin that will be covered, keep it off anything a baby’s face presses against, and skip it if anyone nearby has said fragrance bothers them.

If I can only buy one bottle, which concentration should it be?

Buy the eau de parfum first. It is the more flexible of the two: wearable in more places, applied more generously without overwhelming anyone, and it gives you the full arc of a composition from the bright opening down to the base. An extrait is the better second bottle — the one you buy once you know which family you love. Our own range reflects that, since the entry point of our fragrance collection is an eau de parfum.
